Please help us congratulate Washington High School senior Damien Deen on an incredible achievement at the 2026 Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington, D.C.!
Competing against top high school poets from across the country, Damien earned 2nd place in the national competition, taking home the national runner-up title and a $10,000 prize.
Representing South Dakota on the national stage, Damien delivered powerful performances throughout the competition, including his recitation of “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes. His accomplishment also marks the second consecutive year that a Sioux Falls School District student has earned a second-place finish at the national Poetry Out Loud competition.
Poetry Out Loud is a nationwide arts education program that encourages students to learn about poetry through memorization, performance, and public speaking.
The District also extends a special thank you to Washington High School Oral Interp coach Michelle McIntyre for her guidance, encouragement, and support throughout Damien’s journey.
Congratulations, Damien, on this outstanding accomplishment!
